A friend wanted me to translate this prayer for her. I googled the web, and found a decent translation. And then I checked wikipedia and found a fabulous translation.
Have pasted it here for reference:
Vaishnav jana to tene re kahiye, je peed parai Jane Re;
Par dukhe upakar kare toye, mana abhimana na aane Re.
He is the true devotee of God, who knows and feels another's woes as his own;
Ever ready to serve others in need, he never lets vanity get to his head.
Sakal Loka man sahu ne vande, Ninda na kare keni Re;
Vach kacha mana nishchal rakhe, dhana dhana jananee teni Re.
Bowing to everyone in the universe humbly, and criticising none;
He keeps his speech, deeds and thoughts pure; blessed is the mother who begets such a one.
Sama drushti ne trushna tyagi, para stree jene maat re;
Jihva thaki asatya na bole, para dhana nava jhale haath Re.
He looks upon all with an equal eye, Having rid himself of lust, he treats and reveres every woman as his mother;
His tongue would fail him if he attempted to utter an untruth, He does not covet another's wealth.
Moha maya vyape nahin jene, Drudhha vairagya jena manaman Re;
Raam naam shun tali re lagi, sakal tirath tena tanaman Re.
The bonds of earthly attachment hold him not, His mind is deeply rooted in renunciation;
Every moment he is intent on reciting the name of the Lord Rama, All the holy places are ever present in him.
Vana lobhi ne kapat rahit chhe, kama krodha nivarya Re;
Bhane Narsaiyo tenu darshaan karatan, kool ekoter taryan Re.
He is without greed and deceit, and has conquered passion (lust) and anger
The sight of such a devotee, says Narsinh, will give salvation to a family through seventy-one generations.
